Sudip Jana (b. 1999) is a contemporary artist based in Santiniketan, West Bengal, whose interdisciplinary practice explores the relationship between traditional craft, industrialisation, labour, and changing rural landscapes. He holds an MFA from Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan (2024), and a BFA from The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Kolkata (2021). Rooted in his engagement with the long-standing tradition of madur kathi weaving in Sabang, West Midnapore, Jana’s practice examines the cultural and economic transformations surrounding the craft, which has traditionally sustained generations of his family. Working with fibre, plastic madur, drawing, and weaving processes, he juxtaposes traditional materials and contemporary industrial substitutes to reflect on changing relationships between craft, labour, landscape, and human experience. His work considers how industrialisation and the growing use of plastic alternatives have affected traditional weaving communities, while exploring the delicate balance between preserving inherited knowledge and adapting to social and economic change.
Jana’s work has been presented at the Kochi-Muziris Students Biennale (2025–26); Imaginarum 4.0, Emami Art (2024); SSVAD’s 9th Santiniketan Artists’ Exhibition (2024); “Without Cube,” Hidden Artist Initiative Group Exhibition, M.S. University, Vadodara (2024); “Nakshi,” a Kala Bhavana MFA Final Year Exhibition (2024); The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship Annual Exhibition (2019); and Abhibandana Art Carnival, Academy of Fine Arts (2018), among others. He was a participant in Immerse Fellowship 5.0 (2026).
